They take us in groups to be assigned to mentor-whatevers, but they split us up wrong. I’m two groups behind my girlfriend, Jade. Damn, I hope her mentor-guy isn’t a hottie.

When we get inside, we’re in this huge auditorium type room, only it has weapons and things lining the walls. A training room, I’m pretty sure. There are six people in uniforms lined up behind a six-foot redhaired guy with green skin. Each of the uniformed people has two or three recruits next to them, and the guy in front (I think he’s the head general or something) has two recruits next to him. Shit, Jade’s one of them. I sigh and wait to be assigned to a mentor. My mentor is Arik, a blue-green-skinned First Class General with stern rules. Ugh.

He takes us to assign our rooms, which takes forever and a day. Four hours later it’s finally lunch time, and I get to meet up with Jade in the cafeteria.

“Jade!” I call her name, and she turns her head to look for who called her name, her eyes finally resting on me.
“Alex!” she hurried over to me, catching me in a hug and kissing me lighly. “Who’d you get assigned to?”
I make a face and say, “Arik.”
“That sucks. I got Jem, and I can’t tell if he’s gonna be a good mentor-thing or not yet. He barely talked at all,” Jade says, glancing over at Jem, who is sitting at the table with the other Firsts, who are Sebb and Arik. Mell is also with them, even though she’s a Second Class. Jem is sitting a bit away from the others.
“He looks dark and broody,” I remark.”
“I think he is.”
“Arik’s got a list of rules a mile long. I remember exactly none of them. Except that he said he’ll use us as target practice if we don’t call him ‘sir’.” Jade laughs at that and says, “Jem had only one rule, and it was the same thing, but he told all the recruits at once before we got assigned. Other than that he only talked to tell us our room numbers.”
“Lame.”
Jade nods in agreement. “What room are you in?”
“D628.”
“Damn. I’m in A53. Right across the hall from Jem.”
“Jade, that’s the First Class floor. All the other recruits are on floor D...”
“What? Why am I all the way up there, then?”
“That’s a good question...” I mutter thoughtfully. Why the hell was she the only recruit on floor A? “Where the director around here?”
Jade shrugs. “I dunno. We should probably get food, though, before they close up shop.”
still no official title, oops.
